My backyard American Robin visits the bird bath during a vigorous winter storm. I have been enjoying a great season of winter birding, with recent sightings of Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs, Horned Larks, Bald Eagles, Rough-legged Hawks, American Kestrels and the magnificent Snowy Owl.

While I long for signs of spring, I love winter birding. To see a Snowy Owl in the Michigan winter landscape makes the season that much more enjoyable.

Enjoy the snow, and stay tuned for the first sighting of the Red-winged Blackbird. The return of the Red-winged Blackbird is a sure sign of Spring. In 2012, the Red-winged Blackbird returned to my yard on February 23, 2012. I will be watching!
